October - Moodboard

October arrives in full bloom with death and transformation. The world is saturated before it fades: persimmon and rust, tobacco brown, oxblood, bruised plum, pear gold, bone and cream, the colors of fruit at peak ripeness, fallen leaves, leather, bark and earth. Textures grow protective and tactile: heavy cotton, wool, fur, worn leather, raw wood and woven cloth layered against silk, bare skin and luminous sheers. We wrap ourselves as the air sharpens, gathering warmth while remaining acutely aware of everything that holds us, our lovers, homes, rituals, relationships, routines; the scaffolding beneath a life.

Time feels less linear here. It folds back on itself, retrogrades, repeats. The harvest is at its sweetest just as decay begins: apples and pears, squash and roots, mushrooms erupting from fallen matter. What has been growing all year reaches culmination and bursts forth before releasing itself into the next cycle. There is something both Venusian and underworldly in October, the intimacy of lovers and missed connections, beauty beside mortality, pleasure made more vivid because it cannot last. We are asked to notice what remains when the ornament falls away: what is stable, what is essential, what we are finally ready to shed.

As Samhain approaches, the threshold thins. Light becomes ember, shadows lengthen, and the year begins its descent into the fertile dark. Rather than an ending, decay becomes a kind of alchemy: matter changing form, the visible returning to the invisible, the old becoming nourishment for what cannot yet be seen. We breathe the crisp air, savor the brilliance, and feel the strange relief of release. October reminds us that we are not outside of these cycles. We are ripening, shedding, composting, becoming. The dark is coming, and somewhere inside it, new life has already begun.
